Sun's run for cancer research |

On April 17th, I will be running my first ever marathon. Yep, that's right, 26.2 miles. I am running as a member of the Huntsman Hometown Heroes, a charitable extension of the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. As a Hometown Hero, I have pledged to raise $500 for cancer research. In return, my entrance fee is paid for the race, and I get a running coach to help be prepare mentally and physically for this journey. My company, ADP, will match the first $500 that I raise, so all-in-all, I will be raising $1000 for cancer research. I lost both of my grandmothers to cancer. My maternal grandmother had breast cancer in the 80's. She survived, only to find out 10 years later that the cancer had probably started in her ovaries. She lived only about a month after her second diagnosis. My paternal grandmother had intestinal cancer. She went through a bowel resection and chemotherapy before losing her battle. While both of their deaths were obviously a personal sadness, both women lived a long and full life. Now I am watching a different story play out. My friend's 23 year old daughter has been diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Gardiner's Syndrome. It causes her body to create hundreds. If not thousands of polyps in the colon and intestines, which have to be periodically removed. Some of these polyps have tested positive for cancer and she has had to undergo chemotherapy. She is being treated at the Hunstman Cancer Center. The doctor who is treating her is also part of the team who is doing cutting edge research on her disorder. He has recently isolated the gene responsible for this illness. Now it's a race for time. If he finds a cure, she will still have a chance at a long and healthy life. It's almost impossible to find someone nowadays that has not had their lives impacted by cancer. I am running as a tribute to my grandmothers. I am running to give my friend hope for her daughter's future. I am running so that someday cancer will be something that can be treated or even eradicated. Please help me reach my goal of raising money for this worthy cause.
